Oman Horizon Bulletin

Lahore, January 30 – Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has officially announced that the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will be inaugurated on February 7, 2025, marking a significant milestone ahead of the much-anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The ceremony will be led by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as the stadium completes its renovation process.
Addressing the media at Gaddafi Stadium, Naqvi highlighted the rapid progress of the refurbishment work and lauded the efforts of all those involved in upgrading the venue.
“The Gaddafi Stadium will be inaugurated on February 7 by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. It is in its final stages, with only finishing touches remaining. We had initially begun the demolition process in September, followed by construction in October. We committed to completing the stadium by the end of January, and we are very close to achieving that goal,” Naqvi stated, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Karachi Stadium Renovation Nears Completion
Alongside Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Naqvi confirmed that the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi is also undergoing significant renovation. The venue is scheduled for inauguration on February 11, with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari presiding over the event. The unveiling will take place on the eve of the highly anticipated tri-series featuring Pakistan, South Africa, and New Zealand, which will serve as a crucial preparation event before the Champions Trophy.
Pakistan to Host Grand Ceremony on February 16
Furthering Pakistan’s commitment to successfully hosting the Champions Trophy, a grand ceremony will be held in Lahore on February 16. Naqvi revealed that PCB has extended invitations to all cricket board chiefs of participating teams, ICC officials, and ICC Chairman Jay Shah for the event.
“We are hosting a special ceremony on February 16 in Lahore and have invited all cricket board heads of participating teams, along with ICC officials, including ICC Chairman Jay Shah. We look forward to welcoming them and ensuring a smooth tournament experience for all teams and stakeholders,” Naqvi added.
Challenges in Completing Renovations on Time
The PCB has faced mounting pressure and criticism regarding the timely completion of stadium renovations, particularly after venue shifts and deadline extensions raised concerns about Pakistan’s ability to host the Champions Trophy efficiently. However, Naqvi reassured fans and stakeholders that all necessary security, hospitality, and logistical arrangements are being prioritized to ensure a successful event.
“The PCB is working tirelessly to provide a seamless tournament. We are fully prepared to welcome all arriving teams, ensure their security, and offer a world-class experience during the ICC Champions Trophy,” Naqvi stated confidently.
With the Gaddafi Stadium and National Bank Cricket Arena nearing completion, Pakistan is gearing up to host one of cricket’s most prestigious global tournaments. The successful execution of these renovations will be a major boost to Pakistan’s cricketing infrastructure and reinforce its position as a premier international cricket destination.
