Indonesia Explores Collaboration with India on Aircraft Carrier Construction and BrahMos Missile Deal

Oman Horizon Bulletin

India and Indonesia are engaging in discussions to explore cooperation on advanced defence technologies, including the potential acquisition of BrahMos supersonic missile systems. The two nations have agreed to begin formal negotiations for the missile deal, with Indonesian teams expected to visit India in the near future. One key aspect of the agreement is the need for approval from Russia, as the BrahMos system is a joint venture between India and Russia.

In addition to the missile deal, senior Indonesian officials have expressed a keen interest in leveraging India’s expertise in constructing aircraft carriers. India stands as one of the few countries globally capable of building aircraft carriers domestically, a significant point of interest for Indonesia in the context of strengthening naval defence capabilities. Both nations are also looking to increase collaboration in shipbuilding technologies, according to defence sources.

This development follows a state visit to India by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who was invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his visit from January 23-26, President Subianto attended India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations as the Chief Guest, accompanied by a high-level delegation of ministers, senior officials, and business leaders. The growing defence ties between India and Indonesia reflect broader regional strategic and security interests.
