Artisanal Fishing in Oman Sees Over 477,000 Tons of Fish Landed in 2024, Marking 11.6% Growth

Muscat, 26 Jan (ONA) — The total fish landed through artisanal fishing in the Sultanate of Oman reached 477,312 tons by the end of September 2024, showing an 11.6% increase compared to 427,589 tons in the same period of 2023, according to data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
The overall value of fish landed — including artisanal, commercial, and coastal catches — reached RO 348 million by the end of September 2024. Breaking down the figures, fish landed through commercial fishing totaled 33,688 tons, while coastal fishing contributed 6,358 tons.
The Governorate of Al Wusta recorded the highest volume of artisanal fish landings with 164,816 tons, followed by South Al Sharqiyah at 137,971 tons. North Al Batinah and South Al Batinah contributed 61,532 tons, while Dhofar saw 49,249 tons of fish landed. Other governorates such as Musandam and Muscat recorded 37,061 tons and 26,683 tons, respectively.
Among the different types of fish, small pelagic fish accounted for the largest portion of artisanal landings, with 237,614 tons recorded by September 2024. Large pelagic fish landings reached 134,337 tons, while demersal fish accounted for 85,475 tons.
This significant rise in fish landings highlights the growing success of artisanal fishing in Oman, contributing to the country’s seafood industry and local economy.
