Saudi Arabia makes bold measures when the first-ever IPL auction is held in Jeddah.
Oman Horizon Bulletin
By holding the Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction in Jeddah in 2024, Saudi Arabia has left its mark on the cricket globe.
SAUDI ARABIA: The two-day event, starting Sunday, marks the kingdom’s first major cricket spectacle of this magnitude and clearly indicates Saudi Arabia’s growing ambitions in global sports.
With Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman backing a wave of extravagant investments in sports to diversify the oil-rich economy, the kingdom is increasingly positioning itself as a global hub for major sporting events. The IPL auction in Jeddah is just the latest in a series of sports-related initiatives, with Saudi Arabia already attracting top football stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, and hosting world-class events in boxing, Formula One, and tennis.
For Saudi Arabia, cricket remains a largely untapped market, despite a significant expat community from cricket-loving nations like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The Saudi Cricket Federation is keen to change that perception, launching school programs to build the sport’s local appeal. As Prince Saud bin Mishal, Chairman of the Saudi Cricket Federation, stated, the auction is a key step in the country’s strategy to promote the sport and cement its place as a top-tier destination for international sports events.
The IPL’s auction, watched by millions globally, has generated billions in revenue since its inception. This year’s event in Jeddah features some of cricket’s top stars, including Rishabh Pant, James Anderson, and Mitchell Starc, as well as promising young players seeking their big break. While the specifics of the agreement between Saudi Arabia and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remain undisclosed, experts agree that the partnership benefits both parties: Saudi Arabia boosts its international sporting profile, and the IPL gains access to new markets.
