Carrots Could Help Manage Type 2 Diabetes, Study Finds

Oman Horizon Bulletin

Copenhagen, January 9 (ONA) – New research from the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) suggests that carrots may play a beneficial role in managing type 2 diabetes by improving blood sugar control and fostering a healthier gut microbiome.

Type 2 diabetes, a condition affecting millions globally, is often managed through a combination of medication and dietary changes. However, side effects from conventional treatments remain a challenge for many patients.

The collaborative study, conducted by researchers from SDU, Odense University Hospital, and the University of Copenhagen, indicates that carrots may serve as a natural supplement to conventional therapies. Rich in bioactive compounds, carrots enhance the body’s ability to absorb sugar effectively, promoting better blood sugar regulation.

These compounds, including falcarinol and falcarindiol, not only aid in glucose tolerance but also possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. They support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which produce short-chain fatty acids essential for energy metabolism and stabilizing blood sugar levels.

Interestingly, similar bioactive substances are found in other members of the carrot family, such as parsley, celery, and parsnips, broadening the scope of natural dietary options for diabetes management.

As global rates of type 2 diabetes continue to climb, incorporating everyday foods like carrots into regular diets may provide an accessible, side-effect-free strategy for improving long-term health outcomes.
