Oman Horizon Bulletin

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) in the Sultanate of Oman has inaugurated the “Omani Crafts Exhibition: Authenticity and Modernity” in Muscat. Running until February 22, the exhibition aims to celebrate the rich traditions of Omani craftsmanship while showcasing contemporary innovations inspired by heritage.

The launch event was held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmed Al Shamsi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Development, and attended by several officials, dignitaries, and industry stakeholders. The exhibition serves as a platform to highlight the cultural, economic, and social value of Omani crafts, encouraging collaboration between artisans, designers, and businesses to sustain the craft sector in a modern landscape.

The exhibition is divided into two main sections:

  1. The Authenticity Pavilion – This section explores the deep-rooted history of Omani crafts through three key areas:
    • Heritage Collectibles & Discoveries: Displays rare and historically significant artifacts representing Oman’s artistic legacy.
    • Governorates Showcase: Highlights the distinct craft traditions from various regions across the country.
    • Photography Corner: Features a visual journey through the evolution of Omani crafts, capturing the artistry and dedication of skilled artisans.
  2. The Contemporary Pavilion – This section focuses on the modern application of traditional Omani crafts, divided into:
    • Contemporary Creations: Showcasing the work of present-day Omani artisans who are blending heritage with modern design.
    • Innovation Hub: Demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship techniques can be adapted for contemporary use in design, fashion, and lifestyle products.

The exhibition not only provides a stage for established artisans but also supports emerging talent, helping them connect with new markets and potential collaborators. Through this initiative, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and evolving Omani crafts to ensure their relevance for future generations.

The event serves as a vital effort to strengthen Oman’s craft industry, ensuring that traditional skills are passed down while adapting to modern consumer demands. Visitors can explore the diverse artistry of Omani heritage while witnessing how age-old techniques continue to inspire creativity in contemporary applications.
