Champions Trophy: Harshit Rana Replaces Injured Bumrah in India’s Squad; Chakaravarthy in for Jaiswal
Oman Horizon Bulletin

Mumbai, February 2025 – In a major blow to Team India ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out due to a lower back injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development in an official statement, announcing that young fast bowler Harshit Rana has been named as his replacement.
“Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as his replacement,” the BCCI stated.
Squad Shake-up: Chakaravarthy Replaces Jaiswal
Alongside Bumrah’s absence, the selection committee also made a significant change to the batting lineup, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal with mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy.
“Team India has included Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner replaces Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially part of the provisional squad,” the statement further added.
Jaiswal made his ODI debut against England in a recent three-match series but failed to impress, scoring only 15 runs off 22 balls in his first outing. He was dropped for the second ODI, where Chakaravarthy stepped in and registered 1/54 in his 10-over spell. His performance has now earned him a spot in the final squad.
Bumrah’s Injury Setback
Bumrah, one of India’s leading fast bowlers, has been out of competitive cricket since January after experiencing discomfort during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Sydney. He bowled 10.1 overs in the first innings before scans revealed his back issue, ruling him out for the remainder of the series. Though he came out to bat in the second innings, he was unable to resume bowling duties.
