Oman Launches Nationwide Pre-Marital Screening Awareness Campaign

Oman Horizon Bulletin

Muscat, January 9 (ONA) – The Ministry of Health launched an introductory session today for the National Awareness Campaign on Pre-Marital Medical Screening, aimed at raising public awareness of the program, which will run through 2025.

The screening initiative focuses on reducing the transmission of hereditary blood disorders, such as sickle cell anemia and beta-thalassemia. It also seeks to promote the concept of healthy marriages and prevent social and psychological challenges for families with children affected by these conditions.

By curbing the prevalence of these diseases, the campaign will help ease the burden on healthcare systems and blood banks, while reducing the financial strain on families and society from ongoing medical treatments.

Dr. Said Harib Al-Lamki, Undersecretary for Health Affairs, welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration for the campaign’s success.

Dr. Badriya Al Rashidi, Director General of Health Services, explained the campaign’s objectives and the expected roles of various stakeholders.

The Ministry of Social Development shared insights on the social impact of genetic and infectious diseases, while the Supreme Judicial Council addressed the legal and regulatory frameworks for mandatory screening.

Fahad Yusuf Al Agbari, law lecturer at the University of Sharqiya, presented a paper on pre-marital screening in relation to child and human rights, and Dr. Jamila Taisir Al Abri discussed the societal impact of mandatory screening and future goals for the initiative.

Introduced in 1999 as an optional service at public healthcare centers, pre-marital medical screening is now a key preventive health measure in Oman.
