Muscat Oman stressed in a statement made by Counselor Khalid bin Saleh al Rabkhi, Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, the pressing necessity of taking concrete measures to create a Middle Eastern region free of WMDs. Speaking at the Fifth Session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, Al-Rabkhi emphasized the increasing dangers associated with the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the destabilizing impact these threats have on Middle Eastern security.
