Muscat, January 28 – The Main Moonsighting Committee of the Sultanate of Oman has officially declared that Thursday, January 30, 2025, will mark the last day of the Islamic month of Rajab 1446 AH. Consequently, the first day of Shaaban 1446 AH will fall on Friday, January 31, 2025.
The announcement was made following careful astronomical observations and analysis. According to experts, the moon will set before sunset on Wednesday, 29 Rajab 1446 AH (January 29, 2025), across all regions of Oman. As a result, it will not be possible to sight the new moon of Shaaban on that evening.
Islamic months follow the lunar calendar, with each new month beginning upon the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon. However, when the moon sets before sunset, as is the case this month, it becomes astronomically impossible to witness the crescent, thereby extending the current month by another day.
The moonsighting process is conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions and scientific calculations to ensure accuracy in determining the Hijri (Islamic) calendar. The committee, in collaboration with relevant authorities, follows a rigorous verification process before making official announcements.
Shaaban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar, holds religious significance for Muslims worldwide as it precedes the holy month of Ramadan. Many believers engage in acts of worship, fasting, and spiritual preparation during this month in anticipation of Ramadan.
The Omani authorities continue to emphasize the importance of following both traditional and scientific methods for moonsighting to maintain consistency and accuracy in the Islamic calendar. Citizens and residents are encouraged to stay updated through official announcements.
This update ensures clarity for religious observances, helping the Muslim community prepare for upcoming events in the Islamic calendar.
