Cholera Outbreak in Angola Claims 117 Lives, Thousands Infected

Oman Horizon Bulletin

Luanda, 13 Feb (ONA) — A severe cholera outbreak in Angola has led to 117 fatalities, with 3,543 confirmed cases reported since the beginning of January 2025, according to health authorities.

The outbreak has heavily impacted the capital, Luanda, which accounts for 1,753 cases, while the remaining infections are spread across various provinces. Health officials have expressed concern over the rapid increase in cases, as Angola has been recording more than 100 new infections daily since 1 February 2025. The highest daily count so far was reported on 8 February, with 295 new cases in a single day.

The disease, which first emerged on 7 January 2025, has now extended to multiple provinces, with Luanda and the neighboring Bengo province being the hardest hit. Authorities are intensifying efforts to contain the spread through emergency response measures, including water sanitation initiatives and public health awareness campaigns.

To combat the outbreak, Angola’s Ministry of Health has launched a mass vaccination campaign. Over 925,000 people have already received the cholera vaccine, covering 86% of the targeted population. Officials urge residents in affected areas to take precautionary measures, including drinking clean water and maintaining proper hygiene.

The Angolan government, in collaboration with international health organizations, is working to strengthen response efforts and ensure adequate medical supplies reach affected regions. Health experts emphasize the importance of continued preventive measures, as cholera remains a serious public health threat in areas with limited access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have pledged to ramp up efforts to curb the outbreak and prevent further loss of life.
