MUSCAT : This marks the beginning of the facility’s commercial operations, which are set to produce over 100 million cans of tuna annually, positioning Oman as a key player in the global seafood market.
The plant, located in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), will also process sardines and mackerel, boasting the largest seafood processing capacity in the GCC region. It is expected to process more than 30,000 tons of high-quality raw materials annually, helping meet local demand while enhancing Oman’s standing on the global stage.
The official opening was attended by H.E. Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, who highlighted the significance of the complex in boosting Oman’s fisheries sector and contributing to the country’s food security.
He noted that the Ministry’s strategic projects aim to increase the fisheries sector’s contribution to Oman’s GDP, with exports of fish products reaching 218,000 tons valued at 97 million Omani riyals in the first nine months of this year alone.
The Minister also emphasized a 13 percent increase in natural fisheries production from January to July 2024, totalling 410,000 tons, and a 6 percent rise in the value of fish production. This growth is in line with the Ministry’s vision to expand Oman’s seafood industry, further supported by the complex in Duqm.
