Study Finds Vitamin E Enhances Liver Health in MASH Patients

Oman Horizon Bulletin

Beijing, 20 Feb (ONA): A recent study published in Cell Reports Medicine has revealed that a daily 300 mg dose of Vitamin E significantly improves liver health and biochemical markers in patients diagnosed with Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH).

Key Findings from the Study

The study was conducted across 14 clinical centers in China and included 124 participants with biopsy-confirmed MASH. It was a randomized, placebo-controlled trial lasting 96 weeks, during which patients received either Vitamin E or a placebo, along with standard lifestyle recommendations.

Results & Benefits of Vitamin E for Liver Health

  • Histological Improvement: 29.3% of participants in the Vitamin E group showed notable liver tissue improvement, compared to 14.1% in the placebo group.
  • Liver Enzyme Reduction: Significant decreases were observed in ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase) and AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase), indicating better liver function.
  • Lower Inflammation: Marked reductions in inflammatory markers, including IL-6 and TNF-α, were recorded in those taking Vitamin E.
  • FibroScan Insights: The study suggested potential long-term benefits for liver stiffness, although fibrosis regression was not statistically significant.
  • Steatosis & Inflammation Reduction: Patients receiving Vitamin E experienced notable improvements in fat accumulation (steatosis), lobular inflammation, and fibrosis scores.

Potential Implications for MASH Treatment

While steatohepatitis resolution rates remained comparable between both groups, the study underscores Vitamin E’s potential as a non-invasive treatment option for MASH patients. Experts suggest that Vitamin E could serve as an alternative therapy for those seeking to manage liver-related complications effectively.

These findings contribute to ongoing research exploring nutritional and lifestyle interventions for liver diseases, providing new hope for MASH patients worldwide.
