Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Arrives in Riyadh for Talks with US Officials

Moscow: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Riyadh for high-level discussions with representatives from the US administration. The visit marks a significant diplomatic engagement amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Lavrov’s arrival in a post on social media platform X, stating, “Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrives in Riyadh for a meeting with representatives of the US administration.”

This meeting follows a recent phone conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Lavrov. According to the US State Department, Rubio reiterated President Donald Trump’s commitment to facilitating a resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

A spokesperson for the US State Department issued a statement saying, “Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as a follow-up to President Donald Trump’s conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week. The Secretary reaffirmed President Trump’s dedication to achieving peace in Ukraine and also explored potential areas for bilateral cooperation.”

These discussions come after Trump disclosed that he had a constructive conversation with Putin, during which they agreed to initiate negotiations aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict promptly. In addition to Ukraine, their dialogue covered a range of global issues, including energy, artificial intelligence, and Middle Eastern affairs.

Trump elaborated on the phone call in a post on his platform, Truth Social, describing it as “lengthy and highly productive.” He emphasized their shared reflections on historical ties between the US and Russia, particularly their cooperation during World War II, and expressed optimism about future collaborations.

“I just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, and various global matters. We also spoke about the great histories of our nations and the immense potential of working together. However, as we both agreed, the immediate priority is ending the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump stated.

As part of the diplomatic efforts, both leaders have reportedly directed their teams to commence discussions, with the next step being outreach to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The initiative underscores the growing urgency to seek a resolution to the prolonged conflict.

The meeting in Riyadh is expected to be a crucial step in these diplomatic negotiations, reflecting renewed efforts by global powers to address pressing international concerns through dialogue and collaboration.
