Oman Horizon Bulletin

Muscat: The third annual leadership forum, titled “Artificial Intelligence and Its Role in Higher Education Institutions,” recently concluded in the Wilayat of Duqm, underscoring the transformative impact of AI on academia. Organized by the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), the forum emphasized the need for academic institutions to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

One of the key takeaways from the two-day event was the call for UTAS to integrate micro-credentials into its curriculum to align with labor market demands. Participants stressed the importance of establishing well-defined policies and frameworks for AI adoption in higher education. Additionally, they highlighted the necessity of continuously upgrading technological infrastructure, outlining a strategic roadmap for embedding AI into academic and administrative functions, and fostering strong partnerships with industrial sectors to bridge the gap between education and employment.

A major focus of the discussions was the development of human capital. The forum underscored the need to equip faculty, students, and administrative staff with AI competencies, ensuring that they remain competitive in an increasingly AI-driven world. Universities were also encouraged to invest in AI-powered tools that enhance administrative processes, human resources management, and student employment services.

Over the course of the event, keynote speakers showcased the transformative potential of AI in higher education. Topics included leveraging AI for improved administrative efficiency, enhancing scientific research capabilities, and designing forward-thinking academic programs that equip graduates with future-ready skills. The discussions also explored the benefits of smart learning platforms, which provide personalized educational content, real-time assessments, and instant feedback—key elements in optimizing the student learning experience.

The forum featured five working papers that covered a diverse range of AI applications in academia and industry. Notable presentations included “Artificial Data and Artificial Intelligence as Catalysts for Digital Innovation,” “AI in Education: Advancing Toward an Innovative Future,” and “Microsoft Solutions for Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education.” Industry applications were also highlighted through discussions such as “The Journey of Artificial Intelligence in OQ Group” and “AI: Bridging the Gap Between Reality and Potential in Universities.”

As part of the event, participants embarked on a field visit to the Special Economic Zone in Duqm, where they toured key facilities, including Duqm Port, the fishing port (Samak Factory), the dry dock, and the Karwa car factory. The visit provided attendees with firsthand insights into AI-driven industrial advancements and how they can be leveraged within academic institutions.

The forum concluded with a collective vision for higher education institutions to embrace AI-driven solutions, ensuring that Oman remains at the forefront of digital transformation in academia and beyond. By fostering collaboration between universities, industries, and global AI leaders, the forum set the stage for a future where AI plays a pivotal role in shaping higher education and workforce development.
