Oman Climbs 20 Spots in 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index, Ranks 50th Globally

Oman Horizon Bulletin

Muscat, February 11 – Oman has made a remarkable leap in the 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), advancing 20 places to secure the 50th position globally out of 180 countries. The Sultanate also ranked 4th among Arab nations, reflecting a significant improvement from its 70th place in 2023. Oman’s score surged to 55, marking a 12-point increase from 43 in the previous year, according to Transparency International, the global watchdog headquartered in Berlin.

Oman’s Commitment to Transparency and Integrity

This impressive progress underscores Oman’s dedication to strengthening governance, protecting public funds, and promoting transparency in alignment with global best practices. The country’s efforts to combat corruption and enhance institutional efficiency have played a key role in securing a higher ranking.

Dr. Hamyar Nasser Al Mahrouqi, spokesperson for the State Audit Institution (SAI), emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating:
“Ranking 4th in the Arab world enhances Oman’s global reputation, positioning it as a favorable destination for work and investment. Transparency International follows a rigorous evaluation process to measure public sector corruption across 180 countries, making this a credible global benchmark.”

Collaborative Efforts Behind Oman’s Progress

Dr. Hamyar attributed this advancement to joint initiatives between SAI, the National Competitiveness Office, and other key authorities. Their combined efforts have focused on financial auditing, institutional integrity, and community awareness programs, reinforcing Oman’s Vision 2040 and the National Integrity Enhancement Plan.

He highlighted that SAI’s annual media plan plays a pivotal role in educating the public about financial integrity and responsible governance. Additionally, the institution continues to publish a Community Summary Report in both Arabic and English, which complements its annual report submitted to His Majesty the Sultan.

The Role of Society and International Assessments

Dr. Hamyar stressed the importance of collective responsibility, urging government institutions, businesses, and society to uphold transparency laws and ethical standards. He noted ongoing efforts to increase the number of international institutions assessing Oman’s performance, ensuring that government actions to improve governance and address violations are recognized on the global stage.

Transparency International’s Global Influence

Transparency International, a leading non-governmental organization, spearheads the global fight against corruption by collaborating with governments, businesses, and civil society groups. The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) is one of the most widely referenced reports measuring public sector corruption worldwide.

For the 2024 CPI rankings, six international data sources were used to assess corruption levels. Transparency International follows a standardized process, evaluating each country based on a scale from 0 to 100—where 0 represents the highest level of perceived corruption and 100 signifies the lowest. Oman’s notable improvement demonstrates its commitment to maintaining a transparent and accountable governance system.

Looking Ahead

With this achievement, Oman continues to prioritize good governance and institutional integrity, setting a benchmark for transparency in the region. As the Sultanate strengthens its anti-corruption framework, further advancements in global rankings can be expected in the coming years.
