Tibet Hit by Second Earthquake in 24 Hours, Region Remains Seismically Active

Oman Horizon Bulletin

Tibet, February 3 – The Tibetan Plateau experienced its second earthquake in just 24 hours, as a 4.1 magnitude tremor struck the region on Sunday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The earthquake, recorded at 21:52:48 IST, occurred at a depth of 5 km, making it susceptible to aftershocks. The coordinates of the tremor were 28.52° N latitude and 87.59° E longitude, as per the NCS report.

Series of Recent Earthquakes in Tibet

This follows an earlier 4.2 magnitude earthquake in the region the same day, recorded at 12:47:20 IST, at a depth of 10 km.

The area has been experiencing multiple seismic events in recent weeks:

  • January 30 – A 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 100 km.
  • January 27 – A 4.5 magnitude quake was recorded at a depth of 5 km.
  • January 24 – A 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook the region.

Why Is Tibet Prone to Earthquakes?

The Tibetan Plateau is one of the most seismically active regions in the world due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This geological movement is responsible for the formation of the Himalayas and frequent seismic activity.

According to geologists, shallow earthquakes, like the ones reported recently, tend to be more dangerous than deeper ones, as they release energy closer to the surface, leading to stronger ground shaking and potential damage.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, though no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been issued. Residents in the region are advised to stay alert for possible aftershocks.
