Search Underway for Missing US Plane with 10 People Onboard in Alaska

Oman Horizon Bulletin

Washington, D.C. – A search operation is currently underway in rural Alaska after a Bering Air flight carrying 10 people, including the pilot, failed to reach its scheduled destination in Nome, officials confirmed on Friday.

Flight Reported Overdue

The Cessna Caravan aircraft departed Unalakleet en route to Nome but was reported overdue to Alaska State Troopers at 4:00 p.m. local time, according to the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

The US Coast Guard and local rescue teams have been mobilized for an air and ground search, with the Nome Volunteer Fire Department confirming their involvement in the operation.

Last Known Location

The official Coast Guard account for Alaska’s maritime region stated that the plane’s last recorded position was 12 miles offshore between Unalakleet and Nome. At 4:30 p.m., the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center issued an aircraft emergency notification, prompting Coast Guard District 17 to initiate a rescue response.

Other Recent Aviation Incidents

The search for the missing plane follows several recent aviation accidents involving US aircraft:

  • On Thursday, a US-contracted surveillance plane crashed in the Philippines, resulting in the deaths of four personnel, including one US military service member, as confirmed by the US Indo-Pacific Command.
  • On January 29, an American Airlines flight from Wichita, Kansas, collided midair with a Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, resulting in 64 fatalities, including four crew members.

Ongoing Search and Investigation

Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the missing Alaska flight, and search operations remain in progress. Officials are urging residents and mariners in the area to report any sightings or relevant information that could assist in locating the aircraft.
