According to data published by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), there were 9% more road accidents in Oman in 2023 than the year before.
MUSCAT : A total of 2,000 accidents were recorded, resulting in a traffic accident rate of 12.2 accidents per 10,000 vehicles, up from 11.7 in 2022.
The statistics reveal that a significant proportion of these accidents occurred in Muscat and South Al Batinah governorates, accounting for more than a third of the total incidents. Speeding was identified as the leading cause in 49 percent of all accidents.
Collisions between vehicles were the most frequent type of accident, constituting 42 percent of the total. Other significant causes included being run over (21 percent), collisions with fixed objects (19 percent), and overturning (18 percent).
The report also highlighted an increase in the number of traffic-related casualties. The total number of victims in 2023 – including both fatalities and injuries – reached 2,700, marking a 4 percent rise over the previous year. This includes 595 deaths and 2,129 injuries, with Muscat seeing 438 injuries, and Dhofar recording the highest number of fatalities with 113 deaths.
Statistics also shows an increase in vehicle registrations (standing at 1.7 million), as well as the number of driving licenses issued, which grew by 9 percent to reach 462,000 in 2023.
