Oman Extends Ban on Export of Certain Waste Materials to Promote Sustainable Practices
Oman Horizon Bulletin

Muscat – In a key step towards advancing environmental sustainability, Oman’s Environment Authority has announced an extension to its suspension of environmental licences for the export of specific waste materials. Effective from January 1, 2025, this extension will apply to the following waste categories:
- Used cooking oils
- Used tyres
- Scrap iron
- Used batteries
This suspension, lasting for one year, continues the authority’s efforts to address the environmental challenges posed by waste disposal in Oman. The move aligns with the nation’s broader objectives to enhance local recycling capabilities, reduce waste exports, and manage waste more responsibly.
The ban ensures that these materials will be processed or recycled within Oman, aiming to reduce the environmental impact associated with exporting waste. It also encourages the development of more sustainable local waste management systems.

The Environment Authority has urged businesses, industries, and stakeholders to explore domestic recycling options and support initiatives that promote sustainability. The authority also emphasized the importance of collaboration with government-led projects designed to strengthen the recycling sector and minimize reliance on waste exports.
In a statement, the Environment Authority expressed appreciation to all partners for their ongoing support in protecting Oman’s natural environment, underscoring the collective responsibility in achieving sustainability goals.
