Oman Horizon Bulletin
In the Buraimi Governorate, the Environment Authority (EA) is still carrying out a variety of programs aimed at biodiversity preservation and environmental protection.
Muscat – Through field surveys and aquaculture projects, the department is working across the governorate’s wilayats to safeguard the region’s natural resources.
Recent field surveys have shown significant progress in identifying and protecting endangered species in the region. In the Jabal Al Samini area of Al Rawdha, three water springs were discovered, alongside caves and distinct geological formations. The surveys also documented the presence of eight rare animal species, including the endangered Arabian ibex and Arabian gazelle. Additionally, rare bird species such as the lapwing vulture and the Egyptian vulture were observed in the area.
In the Al Fayyadh area, the department’s efforts revealed three permanently flowing water springs and the identification of six threatened wild animal species, including the mountain fox and the wild cat. This area is also characterized by sustainable flowing valleys that contribute to the local environmental diversity, further supporting the region’s ecological balance.
The Environment Authority has also made strides in its planting initiatives, which have seen great success. A total of 30,785 trees have been planted, and 40,606 seedlings distributed to local communities. Furthermore, nearly 2 million seeds—1,989,589 to be exact—have been planted across various parts of the governorate. Notable projects include the Al-Safa Wall, where 5,000 trees were planted over 25,000 square meters, and the Haya Project, which saw the planting of 4,500 trees in two phases.
The Authority remains committed to preserving the region’s vegetation cover and addressing the challenges posed by climate change. By encouraging sustainable agriculture and increasing green spaces, the Environment Department continues to work in collaboration with local communities and the private sector to ensure the region’s environmental health for future generations.
