Mitchell Starc Pulls Out of Champions Trophy; Australia Names Revised Squad Led by Steven Smith

Oman Horizon Bulletin

Melbourne, February 2025 – In a major blow to Australia’s Champions Trophy campaign, veteran pacer Mitchell Starc has withdrawn from the tournament, citing personal reasons. His absence further weakens the Australian squad, which was already struggling with injuries to key players Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Marsh.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE, and Australia will now have to restructure its bowling attack in Starc’s absence. The left-arm pacer, who played in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, showed signs of discomfort during the second match in Galle. He has requested privacy regarding his withdrawal.

“We understand and fully respect Mitch’s decision,” said George Bailey, Australia’s chief selector. “His dedication to Australian cricket is unquestionable, and while his absence is a setback, it opens up an opportunity for other players to step up.”

Steven Smith to Lead Australia in Cummins’ Absence

With Cummins and Marsh both ruled out, the Australian squad will be led by Steven Smith, who recently guided the team to a 2-0 Test series victory in Sri Lanka. The squad has undergone significant reshuffling, bringing in Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Spencer Johnson, and Tanveer Sangha as replacements.

“The squad has changed significantly in recent weeks due to injuries and the retirement of Marcus Stoinis,” Bailey added. “However, we have called up players with recent international experience, which should help maintain balance within the team.”

New Additions to the Squad

  • Jake Fraser-McGurk, who has played five ODIs with an average of 17.40, impressed with a 95 off 46 balls in the Big Bash League (BBL) and will strengthen the top order.
  • Spencer Johnson, a left-arm pacer, has been brought in as a potential replacement for Starc. He is yet to make an impact in ODIs but brings promise.
  • Tanveer Sangha, a leg-spinner, will partner with Adam Zampa in Australia’s spin department.

Champions Trophy Fixtures

Before the tournament kicks off, Australia will play two ODIs against Sri Lanka on February 12 and 14 in Colombo as part of their preparation. They will begin their Champions Trophy campaign on February 22 against England, followed by matches against South Africa (February 25) and Afghanistan (February 28).
