Oman Horizon Bulletin

The dualization of important roads has been declared by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, and significant projects to upgrade transportation infrastructure are currently under progress.

Muscat: The General Secretariat of the Tender Board has awarded contracts for the dualisation of parts of the Adam-Thumrait Road and the Jabal Shams Road, valued at a total of RO 278 million.

The Adam-Thumrait Road dualisation project will begin in early 2025, following the completion of contractual procedures, with a 36-month implementation period. The project will span across three phases, expanding the current infrastructure to a dual carriageway to improve safety and traffic flow. The third phase of the Adam-Thumrait Road will stretch 132.5 km, connecting the Wilayat of Haima to Maqshan, and will include extensive improvements such as the construction of bridges, truck weight stations, and numerous drainage systems. The fourth phase will extend for 135 km, from Maqshan to Duka, while the fifth and final phase will span more than 132 km, linking Duka to Thumrait.

Eng. Yousef bin Abdullah Al-Mujaini, Director General of Roads and Land Transport, explained that the dualisation will open new opportunities in logistics, tourism, and economic activities. “The dual carriageway of Adam-Thumrait Road, after its completion, is one of the longest projects implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology as a highway,” he said.

In addition to the Adam-Thumrait project, the ministry is also advancing the development of Jebel Shams Road. This new tourist route, measuring around 26 km, will connect key areas around the Sarat and Shams Mountains with South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah Governorates. With a planned implementation period of 24 months, the road will include additional links to popular tourist resorts, expected to boost Oman’s tourism industry further.
