Oman’s Agricultural Cities Aim For A New Era Of Food Security And Economic Sustainability

Oman Horizon Bulletin

Oman takes steps toward ensuring food security and economic sustainability by launching the “Agricultural Cities” project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning.

MUSCAT : The “Agricultural Cities” project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, aims to revolutionize agricultural practices through advanced technologies such as hydroponics, aeroponics, and fish farming.

By selecting strategic locations and developing a sustainable agricultural infrastructure, the initiative is set to boost local production and enhance food security across the nation.

Engineer Saud bin Ali Al Farsi, Director of the Agricultural Cities Project, revealed that evaluations are underway for three potential sites: Wilayat of Saham in North Al Batinah Governorate, Al Dhahirah Governorate, and Najd region in Wilayat of Thumrait, Dhofar Governorate. These locations were chosen based on land viability, water availability, and climate conditions, ensuring efficient transportation and economic integration for agricultural products.

The first phase of the project has already identified two sites for development: Saham and Najd. Leading international consulting firms—Surbana Jurong Company for Saham and Dar Al Handasah Company for Najd—have been tasked with creating detailed plans for these agricultural cities.

His Excellency Mohammed bin Sulaiman Al Kindi, Governor of North Al Batinah, emphasized the project’s vital role in securing food resources amid global challenges, including conflicts and climate crises.

As the project unfolds, it promises to attract local and international investment in sustainable agricultural practices, fostering innovation and economic diversification aligned with Oman Vision 2040. The initiative also aims to develop supportive policies and financial products for farmers, ensuring a robust agricultural economy.
